KERA Cardamom Schemes

Overview

The KERA Project, in collaboration with the Spices Board, implements three focused schemes to improve cardamom cultivation and sustainability in Kerala. These schemes are designed to support individual growers, nurseries, and FPOs with financial assistance and capacity building for better productivity and quality.

1. Cardamom Replantation Scheme

Objective:

To support the rejuvenation of senile and unproductive cardamom plantations through replanting high-quality, climate-resilient varieties.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a registered cardamom grower from Idukki district.
  • Eligible landholding: 0.10 Ha to 8 Ha (own land only).
  • Minimum replanting area: 0.10 Ha; maximum assistance for 2 Ha per year and 8 Ha in 5 years (2024–2029).
  • Replanting only (after removing uneconomic plants); new planting not eligible.
  • Land must not be classified as paddy field.
  • Minimum plant population: 1100 plants/Ha.
  • Online application with mandatory document uploads is required.
  • Eligibility will be verified and approved by the Spices Board/KERA Project.

2. Nursery Scheme

Objective:

To encourage production of quality planting materials by supporting certified nurseries with infrastructure development.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nursery must be located in Idukki district.
  • Must be registered with the Spices Board or Kerala Agricultural University.
  • Should have minimum 1 acre area with 5,000+ seedlings production capacity/year.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in nursery operations.
  • Must commit to supplying quality seedlings to replanting farmers under the KERA scheme.
  • Only one grant per year (either for replantation or nursery) is allowed per applicant.

Grant Support:

  • Financial assistance of up to ₹6 lakhs per nursery.
  • 50%–75% of establishment cost covered by KERA; remaining 25%–50% by the nursery.

3. GAP Certification

Objective:

To promote Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification among cardamom-growing Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) for improved quality and better market access.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a registered FPO/FPC involved in cardamom cultivation or processing.
  • At least 50% of member farmers should already be practicing GAP.
  • FPO must be willing to undergo GAP certification and complete the required process.
  • Support is extended for certification fees and related documentation.

Grant Support:

  • Assistance towards GAP certification, branding, marketing, and value addition activities.
  • Certification must be done through recognized agencies (e.g., AGROCERT).
